New PvP System Release

New PvP System Release

Postby Stone » Tue Jun 18, 2019 3:23 pm

Hi there!

As we mentioned during these days, we want to completely revamp the PvP system, these will be the key points the new Matchmaking System will have:

  • The duration of each PvP Season is one month.
  • Three different leagues: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
  • Players start with 1000 PvP points (rating) and gain/lose points by playing PvP matches.
  • PvP Points reset at the end of the Season to a value which will depend on the league the player ended at.
  • Placement matches (for new players and first matches after the season resets) will give more PvP points.
  • The matchmaking algorithm will only pair you with players in your league with similar PvP Points. There are some exceptions when promoting or demoting to a league (explained below)

=BRONZE LEAGUE=

This is the starting league, new players will be placed here and will start climbing (or descending) on the ladder.

  • PvP Points range: 0-1500
  • PvP Points on Start of the Season and after Season ends: 1000

Promotion

When close to the 1500 PvP points threshold, the matchmaking will start serving you players from the next League (against players at the bottom of the Silver League ladder).
When more than 1500 PvP points have been reached you will need to play and win against an opponent from the Silver League to be promoted to that League.

=SILVER LEAGUE=

The Silver League is the intermediate league, filled with experienced players.

  • PvP Points range: 1500-2200
  • PvP Points on Start of the Season and after Season ends: 1400

Promotion

When close to the 2200 PvP points threshold, the matchmaking will start serving you players from the next League (against players at the bottom of the Gold League ladder).
When more than 2200 PvP points have been reached you will need to play and win against an opponent from the Gold League to be promoted to that League.

Demotion

When close to the 1500 PvP points threshold, the matchmaking will start serving you players from the previous League (against players at the top of the Bronze League ladder).
If you reach less than 1450 PvP points against an opponent from the Bronze League you will be demoted to that league.

=GOLD LEAGUE=

This league is considered the top league of the game for the highest rated players.

  • PvP Points range: 2200 above
  • PvP Points on Start of the Season and after Season ends: 2000

Demotion

When close to the 2200 PvP points threshold, the matchmaking will start serving you players from the previous League (against players at the top of the Silver League ladder).
If you reach less than 2100 PvP points against an opponent from the Silver League you will be demoted to that league.

=REWARDS=

At the end of the season, rewards will be assigned depending on your current position on the ladder and the highest league that you obtained during the current season.

Reaching Bronze League will give you at least a chest of cards
Reaching Silver League will give you at least a chest of cards (with a chance of getting a Legendary card in it)
Reaching Gold League during the season will give you a chest of cards containing at least one Legendary card

These rewards will be obtained by all players that reached each league (it will not take into account the players positions at the end of the Season)

Other special rewards will be assigned depending on the exact position at the end of the season. The amount of gold, cards or exclusive rewards that you can obtain it's till not final so we prefer not to say anything about them yet, more info is coming soon.

=ADDITIONAL INFO=

We have added a new feature into the game, In the event of not having many concurrent players of your same rating and, to prevent having really long waiting times, the server will -from time to time- match you with an "offline" player deck, the AI will use any other eligible player deck.
It will use the player's decks that played PvP at least once within the last 3 months (the list has already been pre-populated by us with real data). The offline decks will always be automatically updated on the server as you play. We don't want to talk much about this feature since it's not fully squeezed, but we believe adding it into the Matchmaking formula it's a really good start and will for sure add some variety and fun. ;)

=FINAL COMMENTS=

While the Deck Value is a fair number to compare two opponents, it just can’t help us in a competitive leaderboard, it won’t work.

We will NOT create leagues by Deck Value or lock players on specific leagues, players should have the opportunity to challenge themselves and keep climbing the ladder.

We believe that progressing on PvP should be similar to other features in the game, a player can not expect to accomplish everything on a couple of weeks, the game just hasn't been designed like that. Also, we believe significantly improving the rewards on each league will give an extra motivation to play against stronger opponents.

We welcome and encourage anyone to give us some feedback about it as soon as it's out.

We would also take the chance to thank you for your patience and for providing us with lots of nice suggestions.

This feature will come live as soon as we release the next update (which should be within the month of June!), stay tuned!

Thanks Stone for the information, this sounds like a good change to PVP!
Currently I have two main questions:
  • Will the per match rewards be different on different leagues? (for example will a win in bronze give the same gold as a win in silver? If not, what prevents a player from promoting to gold then dropping to bronze each month to get rewards and farm easy matches?)
  • Given the current setup as described the number of players in each league is fixed (when one person promotes, one person demotes). How is initial promotion going to be handled at the start of each season?

Thanks for your continued attention to PVP.

Hello,

Will the per match rewards be different on different leagues?

All matches give the same amount of gold. While reaching a league will give you a reward at the end of the month, also your position at the END of the season will give you a reward (better depending on your position).

Given the current setup as described the number of players in each league is fixed (when one person promotes, one person demotes)

It's not fixed, the amount of players on each league will depend on their personal ratings, once a player reaches the necessary amount of rating will be promoted/demoted to the next/previous league.

Thanks Kramito for your reply. Regarding fixed number of players in each league I was referencing these lines:
  • When more than 1500 PvP points have been reached you will need to play and win against an opponent from the Silver League to be promoted to that League.
  • When more than 2200 PvP points have been reached you will need to play and win against an opponent from the Gold League to be promoted to that League.
And
  • If you reach less than 1450 PvP points against an opponent from the Bronze League you will be demoted to that league.
  • If you reach less than 2100 PvP points against an opponent from the Silver League you will be demoted to that league.

Unless I am misunderstanding, promotion/demotion is gated by both personal rating and playing someone from the higher/lower league. The first condition (rating) is not a restricting factor, but the second condition (playing someone from the other league) is where the implication that one person promotes while one person demotes comes from.

Thinking more about this, if the promotion/demotion can come against an AI opponent, then there isn't an issue with fixed numbers, but that also means the only way to increase the number of players in gold league is by silver league players beating an AI gold league opponent.

Alternatively, if it is purely ratings based and does not require playing someone from a higher league to promote, then it seems the initial post should be corrected given what I quoted above.

Thanks for all of your work on the game!

Hey Trogdorr,

While you can play to an opponent from the "next" league, doesn't mean that he'll be demoted (it'll depend on the current rating of your opponent). An example would be if your opponent is on the next league with 1505 points, even if he loses, he won't fall to the next league, as he still has "55 points" of margin to get demoted to the previous league.

Ah okay that makes sense, I didn't understand that you could be matched with someone outside of your league without being on the verge of promoting/demoting. Thank you for clearing that up for me.

I am looking forward to seeing how this impacts PVP but it looks fun to me!

Hey,

Yes, when you're close to the next league, you will start to find opponents from the other league (the same goes if you're just promoted to a new league or close to demotion).

I don't think a new pvp system tackles any of the problems the game is facing...like the small playerbase

i think a lot of new players quit after a short time for other reasons like:
  • no chance to catch up, because of the fusion system
  • no cheap decks to build, because of the fusion system(in other tcg's you can pretty easily build a competitive meta deck without farming for years)
  • somewhat toxic playerbase
  • lack of reward for evolving monsters - I think new players like the aspect of evolving, but non-evolve monsters are usually more consistent and seem to profit a lot more from fusions
  • cards that play around the action point mechanic

Hello,

Thanks for your suggestions, we'll keep in them in mind for future updates. Currently we're working on the PvP system (it should be available this week) and we'll proceed to improve other aspects of the game after that.
